Hardscape for a City Shaped by Water

We install pavers in Eden Prairie with one question near the top of the list: where does the rain go once it hits the new surface? About 2.7 square miles of the city is water, and Staring Lake, Lake Riley, Round Lake, Bryant Lake and Purgatory Creek all sit inside its borders. A patio or driveway is a hard surface that sheds water, so on many Eden Prairie lots the layout, the slope and the choice between standard and permeable pavers matter as much as the color of the stone.

Why slope is the first line on the drawing

A paver surface needs a gentle fall so water leaves it instead of pooling. Unilock's installation guidance calls a slope of 1% to 2% adequate for drainage. We point that fall toward lawn, planting beds or a rain garden and away from the foundation, the neighbor's yard and any path that leads straight to a storm inlet. On a lot that tips toward a pond or a creek corridor, we look at the whole yard first so the new patio does not simply speed up the runoff that was already crossing it.

Permeable pavers as an option

Permeable interlocking pavers have wider joints filled with small stone. Water drops through those joints into a crushed-rock reservoir and soaks into the soil below. The Minnesota DNR lists driveways, sidewalks and patios among the light-traffic uses where this kind of pavement fits. It is not the right answer for every yard: it needs a deeper stone base, it works best where the subsoil can take water, and it needs the joints vacuumed now and then so silt does not seal them. For a homeowner who wants a large patio close to the water without adding to the runoff, it is worth a look, and we will tell you plainly if your soil makes it a poor bet.

Paver work we do in Eden Prairie

  • Paver patios off the back of the house, sized for the way you actually use the yard
  • Walkways from the driveway to the front door, or out to a dock path or garden
  • Paver driveways, standard or permeable, with a base built for vehicle weight
  • Retaining walls where a yard steps down toward a lake, pond or ravine
  • Fire pits and seating walls set on a stable, non-combustible pad
  • Repair and releveling for sunken sections, heaved edges and washed-out joints

A city with long-time owners

Census estimates show about 76.1% of Eden Prairie homes are owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $473,900. People who plan to stay tend to want hardscape that lasts many winters, which is why our written quotes spell out the base depth, the base material and the edge restraint, not just the paver style.

Trails, parks and the front walk

Eden Prairie has more than 170 miles of multi-use trails and about 2,250 acres of parkland. Many homes back onto that open space. A paver path that ties a back patio to a trail gate, or a front walk that replaces a narrow concrete strip, can change how a property works day to day. We plan widths so two people can walk side by side and so a snow shovel or blower fits without catching edges.

Eden Prairie Ground and Water

  • Lakes and a creek inside city limits. Of Eden Prairie's roughly 35 square miles, about 2.7 square miles are water. Named features include Staring Lake, Lake Riley, Round Lake, Bryant Lake and Purgatory Creek, so many lots drain toward a lake, pond or creek corridor.
  • Owner-occupied and valuable. Census ACS estimates for 2020 to 2024 put Eden Prairie's owner-occupied housing rate at 76.1% and the median owner-occupied home value at $473,900, with 88.5% of residents in the same house a year earlier.
  • Housing stock still growing. The city counted 21,026 housing units in 2000, 25,075 in 2010 and 25,995 in 2020, so neighborhoods range from older farmhouse sites to homes built in the last two decades.
  • Extensive trail and park network. Eden Prairie has more than 170 miles of multi-use trails, about 2,250 acres of parks and 1,300 acres of open space, including the Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail.
  • Permeable pavers suit light traffic. The Minnesota DNR describes permeable interlocking pavers as passing stormwater through surface voids into a stone reservoir, and lists driveways, sidewalks and patios among suitable light-traffic uses.

Eden Prairie Questions

My backyard slopes toward a pond. Can I still put in a big paver patio?

Usually, yes. The patio gets a slight fall, typically 1% to 2%, and we direct it toward lawn or planting beds rather than straight at the water. On steeper ground we may add a low retaining wall to create a level area. If runoff is a concern, a permeable section or a gravel infiltration strip along the low edge can help.

Are permeable pavers worth it for an Eden Prairie driveway?

They can be if your subsoil drains reasonably well and you are willing to vacuum the joints occasionally. They need a deeper stone base than a standard driveway. We check the soil during the estimate and tell you whether permeable makes sense on your lot or whether standard pavers with good grading are the better choice.

Do I need my HOA's approval before adding a patio?

Some Eden Prairie subdivisions have associations that review exterior changes, and the rules differ from one to the next. Check your covenants before we schedule. We can give you a written scope and a sketch to submit with your request.

Can you connect a new patio to a trail behind my house?

We can build a paver path up to your property line. Anything on park or trail land belongs to the city, so we stop at your lot line and keep the grade so water does not spill onto the trail.
